Checklists for Healthcare
Proven to Help the Healthcare Industry Reduce Adverse Events
Checklists provide a backup to human memory during routine and emergency procedures. They serve as a formal reminder to help prevent adverse events of omission and contribute to a safer environment. Checklist Board Corporation’s unique, patented Checklist Board ™ design is a direct result of input from healthcare professionals and practitioners throughout the United States.

Each Checklist board is made of 1/4 clear acrylic, and available in assorted sizes. Our design team works closely with each user group, assuring that checklist content is customized and addresses site-specific needs to mitigate preventable adverse events. Additional space can be created for a count or notes section on the board. The board is delivered completely assembled and typically mounts on a wall. They can be engineered to mount on a door or cart and can be designed to be portable. Once installed, as checklist items are completed, the patented slider is physically moved from red to green, creating an audible click indicating that checklist item as complete.
Documented Improvement
In Adverse Event Prevention for Hospitals and Surgical Centers
Implementation of Checklist Boards in healthcare delivers documented improvements in communication, teamwork and safety. This drives reductions in preventable adverse events and infection rates. Analysis of one hospital group’s Checklist Board implementation delivered a 31% decrease in re-admissions the first year, generating an estimated $2 million dollars in savings.

Checklist boards are used throughout the hospital—from the emergency department, to the pre-op setting, to the operating room.  You can find them in the recovery room, patient rooms and on the walls at the nursing station for scheduling.

Background Aviation
to Healthcare
The use of pre-flight checklists is a key element o f airline safety when combined with the other approaches of Crew Resource Management (CRM). These approaches have contributed to making commercial aviation the safest form of transportation today. In Aviation, Checklists are used prior to all critical events such as engine start up, takeoff, descent and landing. Checklists provide a backup to human memory during routine (and emergency procedures) During these procedures, teams work together on the checklist and all must agree that it is safe to proceed. There is a shared responsibility for properly carrying out t he procedure. If a fault is found, it must be corrected before proceeding with the remaining items on the checklist. This minimizes the possibility of misinterpreting or overlooking a critical step. These checklists facilitate the routine systematization of multi-step processes, improve team dynamics and minimize adverse events.

The success of CRM in making commercial aviation safer has led to its use as a commonly safety-related model for healthcare. Checklist Boards has developed a course for healthcare based on the aviation safety principles of CRM. This course is called LESSONS from the FLIGHT DECK TM . Checklist Boards are a major part of CRM.

Improvements in communications, teamwork, and safety, plus reductions in preventable adverse events and infections are all track-able positive results of using Checklist Boards. Users of our Checklist Boards have documented the elimination of missed steps and wrong site procedures in Medical Centers across the country.
